The Strokes – Portsmouth Guildhall

The Strokes ‘concert hall’ tour of the UK finally hit Pompey last night to an audience half drunk with excitement (the other half were just drunk from lager). Ripping through a set of an hour and twenty minutes they started with ‘The Modern Age’ and ‘Juicebox’ before wading their way through songs from all 3 of their albums. The biggest cheers were for the older songs, particularly ‘Last Night’ and ‘Hard To Explain’. Musically the band were totally on the beat and very tight sounding, and seemed intent on providing a good listening experience, compared with some of their festival shows last year where they were clearly out of their heads and having too much of a party on stage to really care what they sounded like. Now the band are back to doing what they do best – looking cool and playing taught indie rock and roll.
